CEVA claims new study shows benefits of using D.A.P. during puppy socialisation

Puppy training

According to CEVA, a recent study1, published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, has revealed that the canine pheromone, D.A.P., helps puppies develop into balanced and well-trained adult dogs if utilised during puppy classes.

A year after training, 79% of owners whose puppies had been fitted with a D.A.P. collar rated their dog's behaviour as good or very good. These dogs were better socialised, but, more importantly, also adapted faster to new situations and behaved better when faced with unfamiliar people.

In contrast, only 2% of owners from the placebo group rated their dog's behaviour as good or very good and 52% rated their dog's behaviour as bad or very bad.

The results of this study suggest that veterinary practices should be pro-active in holding, or promoting, puppy classes and in recommending the pheromone to new owners. Taking action at this age will help prevent behavioural issues in the future, which too often lead to dogs being re-homed or even euthanased.

"It is vital that steps are taken to ensure experiences during the first three months of life are positive and enjoyable for a puppy, especially given that they can permanently influence a dog's behaviour in later life," says Lucy Brett, product manager at CEVA Animal Health.

"Fitting a D.A.P Collar to a puppy will help it cope appropriately with all the new sights and smells it will encounter on a daily basis and help the puppy learn more effectively during training."
